Colombian Beauty is a Beauty Inside and Out
Immigrating from her hometown of Medellín Antioquia, Colombia to New Jersey, Zulay had no idea the type of impact she would have on her new found homeland. She not only wanted to live in the United States, she also wanted to serve in the U.S. army. She did so for three years after high school. Shortly after the army she matriculated into the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts to study acting. After appearing in two short films, Zulay’s career took off with her television debut in an episode of Lifetime drama series, Army Wives. 2007 was her year; she appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Illegal Tender and Feel the Noise. From there she would appear in a number of other films and television shows. Her most recent works include: Destined, The True Memoirs of an International Assassin, Meet the Blacks, Grow House and OWN’s #1 rated drama If Loving You Is Wrong. By making her mark she has worked alongside some of Hollywood’s greatest contenders including: Paul Walker, Channing Tatum, Nia Long, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Amy Smart, Mike Epps, Jesse Metcalfe and a list of many more. While she continues to be great we were able to catch a moment with her and get to know the Zulay behind the name.
1. I’ve read in your blogs that you are very spiritual. When did your spiritual journey begin and what is the greatest virtue that you have learned throughout your spiritual experience?
I grew up in a very spiritual family so I was introduced to God at a very early age. As an adult and as a woman there have of course been events and circumstances that have brought me to my knees in need of answers and guidance from God. The biggest lesson I have learned and am still learning is to trust in him and his ways. There isn’t much I am in control of anyway, so worrying about the future is just not wise. Living in the present as much as I can, and when I get ahead of myself, I stop and check in with his love and peace.
2. What is your favorite book to read? Why?
I’ve loved many books but don’t know if I have an ultimate favorite. Right now I am reading, “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren, this is such a straightforward way at life with purpose and peace every day. It is a life changer for me…
3. What is your greatest quality that you believe people love and find inspiration in?
I had to skip this one for a second and think about it. I really love people and I believe the reason I am an actress is because of my ability to have empathy. I guess people find my passion for people and relatable personality inspiring.
4. What are some of your future plans in the entertainment industry?
I am starting a production company with my brother Steven and at the moment have a script we are working on. I am starring and producing it and am completely enamored with the idea of birthing the original idea and nurturing it to life from beginning to end. Professionally, I am looking forward to being behind the camera and providing a platform for myself to tell the stories I want to tell.
5. If you were to star as a DC or Marvel comic character in a movie, who would it be and why?
Haha… I would create a Latina super hero– I don’t think we have one and it would be awesome to create a hero that Latino kids could love and relate to.
6. If you were to create your own swim collection, what would it be and what style would it depict?
I actually have this on my vision board and have started some research. Creating a swimsuit line is a dream of mine. My line would be very sexy yet upscale and sophisticated with lots of intricate patterns, color schemes, and hand stitching. Very Colombian 🙂
7. Being that you were a former member of the army, what do you do to keep up that beautiful hourglass shape of yours?
Thank you for such an awesome compliment! I honestly have to say, that I made myself fall in love with the gym and a healthy lifestyle. I combine a lot of different activities along with the gym and personal training. I love to hike, cycle, and have recently started to incorporate yoga. Thanks to the army, I was introduced to a pretty tough workout regimen early on, so now it’s just a part of my daily routine.
8. A lot of experts say that much of the bikini body workouts start in the kitchen. Can you “throw down” in the kitchen?
I am NOT a gourmet chef, but I definitely know my way around the kitchen and don’t get any complaints!
9. Give me a taste of Colombia! What dish would you prepare for me?
I love the typical Colombian breakfast, which is an AREPA (a corn meal Patty) eggs, and cheese and whatever else you want to throw on there… avocado etc…
10. In your opinion, what are the greatest words of wisdom anyone can have?
Love is wisdom and power.
After such an inspirational conversation with Zulay, we found out some of her dislikes, likes and favorite things to do. With such an amazing spirit and personality Zulay is my favorite Colombian to date (not that I’ve had the pleasure to converse with very many) but you too can get to know Zuley by finding her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/OfficialZulayHenao/
