Juju is truly an inspiring Latina! The Entrepreneur, Author and Beauty Expert is making waves in the beauty and entertainment industry and stepping into the spotlight! With her newest book, Secrets of A Jewel, ShuString Magazine recently sat down with the classy Cubana who could actually pass as Gabrielle Union’s sister!
We all know you as the long-time girlfriend of Harlem rapper Cam’ron, how long have you all been together?
We been together for 9 years . Cam and I started as friends, we took time to build a friendship first and that’s what makes our relationship unique.
OMG! You look just like Gabrielle Union, do you hear that a lot?
(laughs) Yes, I do and it’s such an awesome compliment. I absolutely love Gabrielle Union, she is a truly inspiring and amazing. We actually follow one another on Instagram and like each other’s pics! Lol
You are Afro-Cuban, can you please explain to our readers where you are from and your background.
Yes! I’m a proud Afro-Latina. I was born in Brooklyn New York and raised in Miami Florida, in a very Cuban household where we ate Rice and Black beans almost every day (LoL).Both of my parents are 100% Cuban from Havana, they immigrated to U.S in 1980’s. I’m Cuban of African descent, I’ve been visiting Cuba since I was a little girl and I love everything about my culture.
In the past, you have spoken about being body shamed. How have you handled this and what advice would you give to young women with this issue?
It took me years to embrace my curves. As a young teen, I already had a voluptuous figure, before it was cool or acceptable. I looked different from all the girls my same age. I would cover up and wear baggy clothes. I didn’t want to bring any attention to my body. I handled this by picking up a healthier lifestyle, I got heavily involved in fitness, which really helped me embrace my curves and feel confident about my figure.
To the young women with this issue, you are not alone many of us experienced the same exact thing, I want you to know that you and you alone have the power to change your own perspective about yourself, don’t allow anyone else to control how you feel about you!
Every entrepreneur has a fear of something when starting a business. Tell me one of your fears when you decided to step out and open your own businesses?
I’m fearless when it comes to business. I take risk! I’m very ambitious and I work extremely hard. But one of my concerns when I first started was from a creative standpoint, I brainstormed a lot on how was I going to ensure my product and brand stood out from the competitors.
What would you say is the hardest thing about being an entrepreneur?
The hardest thing for me has been learning to delegate vs being involved in every single aspect of the business. As your business begins to grow, you have to trust others to handle certain things. That was a challenge for me because I’m a hands on business woman and my businesses are like my babies! it’s hard to let go, even its just a little piece.
There are a lot of young women who are pursuing the entrepreneurial path. What advice would you give them regarding starting a business?
Do a lot of research, and know that all successful entrepreneurs have taken missteps before nailing it.
What do you feel is the biggest misconception of reality television? What is a truth about reality television most people don’t know?
The biggest misconception is that they make you do things you don’t want to, that isn’t true. The truth is there is a fun part of reality TV it isn’t all drama and you get to build relationships with incredibly talented people behind the scene.
What other goals do you see for Juju in the future?
So many! The main one is becoming a bestselling author , turning my book Secrets Of A Jewel into a series and getting into some acting.
