Desi Perkins, or as you may know her as Desi Makeup, is a YouTube makeup sensation. She is what most people would call a Makeup Guru. Desi has over 1 million followers on Instagram as well as over 1 million subscribers on YouTube. But who is the real Desi Perkins?

Surely she’s more than a well-dressed woman who can “beat her face” at the drop of a dime. Fortunately, she was kind enough to allow us to sit down with her and pick her brain about makeup, fashion, her biggest phobia, and how she became Desi Makeup.
Desi says she started off as a freelance makeup artist in college at the tender age of 21. She did this for about 4 years before she started to post her work on social media. Her makeup talent was a hit, so naturally, she was asked to start doing tutorials on YouTube. Before she knew it she was discovered by Ipsy.com, Online Beauty Site Co-Founded by Michelle Phan. When asked who inspires her make-up wise, Desi reveals that she gets her makeup inspiration from Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, as well as close friends of hers such as Chrisspy, better known as Chrisspy makeup, who is also a well known makeup guru from YouTube. The beauty product Desi says she absolutely can’t live without, an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow pomade, which is understandable considering the eyebrow epidemic that has become so prominent recently. As for fashion, she feels that a leather jacket can make anything look like you at least tried to get dressed.

“I just love it, it’s a staple, it’s never going to go out of style,” Desi explains.

Even though makeup is what Desi does best, we did not stay on that topic throughout the course of our conversation with her. When asked what the best advice she’d ever been given, personally or professionally, she recalled a conversation that she’d had with her father back when she was “Desi the Trouble Maker.” She said, “My father advised me to think about the consequences that my actions could potentially cause. If the action was worth the worst possible consequence that I could think of then there was no reason not to do it. However, if the crime was not worth the punishment then it wasn’t worth getting in trouble for.” The simplicity of this advice resonated with her ever since that day, and Desi says that it strayed her away from going down the wrong path in life. I know that most, if not all of you, are just as shocked as we are to know that sweetheart, Desi Perkins, was a troublemaker in her younger days, but that is nothing compared to the phobia that she has of cotton balls. Yes, I said cotton balls. She has no real explanation as to why she is afraid of them; she just says that they make her feel uncomfortable. She compares her fear of cotton balls to the feeling one might get from hearing nails on a chalkboard.
Desi’s top beauty weapon in her arsenal is: Confidence. She sincerely believes, “If you believe that you are the prettiest person in the world people feed off of that, and you might not be the cutest person in the world, but that confidence is attractive. Being attractive is more powerful than being beautiful.” Talk about words to live by. Desi Perkins is an amazing individual with amazing talent, so there is no doubt that she will achieve her goals and much much more. She’s on the fast track to building an empire, and there’s no putting a stop to her.

“The woman who does not require validation from anyone is the most feared individual on the planet.” –Mohadesa Najumi
